John lived his early life in Mt. Kisco and raised his family in Bedford Hills. He is survived by his devoted wife (Joan) of 62 years, his three children (Christine, Karen and Paul), his five grandchildren (Mark, Michael, Benjamin, Matthew and Anna), his sisters (Judy and Patricia) and brother (Robert). John was predeceased by his father (Ernest), mother (Katherine) and brothers (Edward and Joseph).
John served briefly in the Marine Corp before enjoying a long career as an educator with the Bedford Central School District. He began as a social studies teacher at Pound Ridge Elementary, then became an assistant principal at Fox Lane High School and finally the principal of Mount Kisco Elementary School for two decades. John held degrees from SUNY Cortland and Columbia University.
John was a committed family man, community member and friend. He engaged in many volunteer efforts throughout his life, including (but not limited to) as a volunteer fire fighter in Mt. Kisco, a volunteer driver/coordinator for Friends In Service Helping (FISH) and a board member of Fellowship Hall in Bedford Hills. John loved to golf, to tend his flowers and to organize his world in his free time. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Home in Rhinebeck on Monday, May 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. Prayers will be offered during hours.
On Tuesday, friends will be received at the Cassidy & Flynn Funeral Home at 288 E. Main St. in Mt. Kisco from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. and interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery also in Mt. Kisco.
Memorial donations may be made in John’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
